It can be frustrating to hit a creative block or feel like you’re not reaching your full potential as an artist. Without proper mentorship and guidance, it’s easy to feel lost in the vast world of art. With a background rooted in both traditional and contemporary art forms, Robert brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the art world. His journey as an artist and educator has taken him through various mediums and techniques, allowing him to develop a unique perspective on the creative process. With him, you can learn from his rich background in traditional and contemporary art, and a passion for nurturing creativity.

Teaching philosophy and approach to nurturing creativity

In this exclusive interview with our art tutor, Robert Wilson, we gained valuable insights into his teaching philosophy and approach to nurturing creativity. Robert believes that creativity is innate in every individual and that it is his role as a tutor to provide the space, guidance, and encouragement for that creativity to flourish.

Can you share some key techniques or tips that participants can expect to learn and practice during the workshop?

“Key techniques would be working wet on wet plus wet on dry. Lifting out, to create lighter tones. Dry brushing and working with masking fluid [or] tape. These techniques provide a solid basis for understanding how the medium works and what kinds of paintings can be done with it.”

How do you tailor your teaching approach to accommodate artists of different skill levels, from beginners to more advanced practitioners?

“ I would adapt both the subject matter and also how we were painting it. For example [regarding subject matter] painting an apple would be a more suitable subject for a beginner than for example the human face, because of the reduced emphasis on  proportion and the absence of skeletal structure. It still provides the opportunity however, to work with a variety of techniques and methods which can be applied to more challenging subjects. Another way of adjusting the complexity of the painting is to work in monochrome for beginners, which takes out the aspect of colour and uses only tonal varieties to describe the subject. “

Emphasising the importance of creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment, Robert’s approach focuses on fostering a sense of experimentation and risk-taking, encouraging students to push beyond their comfort zones and discover new ways of thinking and creating. By fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere, Robert empowers his students to embrace their unique artistic voices and develop their skills with confidence and passion.

“I like to keep things quite informal in the sessions. I recognise that it’s a social thing as well as a learning opportunity for participants. That said I always find it helpful to make a painting alongside the students, so this way they can actually see how the paint is applied, how it is mixed etc.  I like to punctuate the class with short demonstrations, which I feel gives the participants an understanding of how the different processes connect to each other in the evolution of a painting. It also gives them a break from what they are doing, to assess how things are going and also allows them to look at, and compare each other’s work, as this is often a valuable part of learning.”

Creative insights and inspirations that shaped his artistic journey

We also delved into the creative insights and inspirations that have shaped his artistic journey. Wilson shared how his past experiences and surroundings influence his artistic style, emphasising the importance of nature and its intricate details as a major source of inspiration for his work. While discussing the significance of experimenting with different mediums and techniques, Robert explained how to push the boundaries of traditional art forms and foster creativity.

“I like the unpredictability of watercolour, and also the way it can be used very loosely or in a more controlled way. It’s a very adaptable and versatile medium. It’s different from other mediums because you can only use it in a diluted form, i.e. with different ratios of pigment to water. But this characteristic makes you really investigate what can be done within this limitation.”

Robert’s passion for storytelling through art was evident. Overall, this interview provided a fascinating glimpse into the creative mind of an artist dedicated to capturing the beauty and complexity of the world through his art.

Impact of art on personal growth and empowerment

Robert shared profound insights on the impact of art on personal growth and empowerment. According to him, art serves as a powerful tool for self-expression, introspection, and healing. Engaging in artistic endeavours allows individuals to tap into their inner creativity, explore their emotions, and gain a deeper understanding of themselves.

“I had a great time making abstract paintings with watercolour with my daughter Rosemary when she was about 5. It was winter and it had been snowing, so we went outside and made snowballs, which we then injected with watercolour paint from a Calpol syringe. Then we took them inside and let them melt on some lining paper. It was brilliant fun watching the abstract shapes developing and merging with each other.”

By channelling their thoughts and emotions into their artwork, individuals can release pent-up feelings, gain clarity, and develop new perspectives on life. The act of creating art can be a cathartic experience that promotes self-discovery and emotional well-being.
